advice

I never get tired of well-penned, inspiring, and clearly intelligible phortune cookie filosofy. However, this is not that. I don’t even know what it means. Maybe something got crossed at the printer? What’s a heavy desire?

Let’s hope.

You can’t lead where you won’t go and you can’t teach what you don’t know. This was something my father used to say all of the time. I can’t find its source. I’d like to believe that my Dad was the first to say it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he heard it from someone first. Any suggestions on sources would be most appreciated.

That being said, I think this philosophy can take a person a long way.  There’s a lot of truth in this basic tenet. How can you ask someone to do something you haven’t done yourself? How can you tell something you aren’t aware of?

So does this mean I don’t have to go through the New Year’s Resolution exercise?

Is this the solution the President and Congress have been searching for?

EachDaySadWhen we’re feeling badly because of some “sad news,” It’s easy for us to think we’ve got the corner on tragedy. But the truth of the matter is that everyone (from the Queen of England to the village pauper) has got problems. They just manifest differently for each of us.

It’s important when times are tough to remember that each day is a gift and we’re well-served to live them like they’re all we’ve got. Doing that, I think, allows us all to make the difference we’re meant to make!

CuriousAlwaysAn unfading desire for knowledge is admirable. As Faber College founder Emil Faber said, “Knowledge is Good.” Of course, not everyone has the thirst for knowledge that allows them to be curious always. But it is sage advice. Lifelong students discover new ways of doing old things. And that leads to personal, professional, and social progress.

StupidQuestionsLet’s hope I don’t give “stupid answer” on tomorrow’s Cyberlaw Final Exam. Wish me luck…

PunctualityI hate being late. In fact, I think that being five minutes early is on time and being on time is late.  But I don’t really know why that makes me gentle.

RowsTheBoat

This reminds me of Thomas Jefferson’s quotation about “a little rebellion now and then [being] a good thing…”  Only the opposite.

If you’re busy working, the fortune cookie message seems to say, you don’t have time to get yourself in trouble. Of course, that works well until the boat needs to be rocked. After all you can row a boat right into an iceberg (can anyone say “Titanic“).

Maybe a healthy balance of rowing and rocking might be better advice.
